Jeffrey Moose Gallery will present new work by painter Gerry Lonning, and mixed media Xerox compositions by Jeffrey Moose March 14th through April 21st. A reception for the artists will be held at the gallery on Thursday, March 15th from 5:30 to 8:30 pm. Mr. Lonning, a resident of Suquamish, works in subtle grids, often complimented by found images, which reflect a sophisticated understanding of Abstract Expressionism and Pop art. Mr. Lonning's works are Hans Hoffmanesque in their defference to the grid and subtle color juxtapositions. He breaks from the conceptual with the use of stenciled found imagery, most of which is obscure, ironic and just humorous enough to let you off the formal Hoffman hook. Living in Kitasp County since the late 80šs, Mr. Lonning has worked in a variety of ephemeral media including photocopy reproductions ( in 1977 he showed in a Xerox-themed show at the University of Colorado, Boulder) and found objects. He came out of the midwest, graduating with Honors in Art and Philosophy in 1975 from the University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire. Mr. Moose, of Poulsbo, has long worked with images from media, pastel, printmaking methods and colored paper collage to create images which address personal identity, politics and nature. His history as a printmaker, trained at Chicago's School of the Art Institute, has kept him working with paper for many years. In preparing for a recent move, he was confronted with years of memories and keep-sake photos, some of which were inspiration for art in his exhibit. Windows removed from his former home, built in the 30's with hand poured glass pains, are fashioned into memories of he past from hand made and photographic elements.
