Suquamish artist Gerry Lonning will exhibit painted and stamped works on paper and LP’s at Jeffrey Moose Gallery for the months of May and June. His work will be featured in a Virtual First Friday event, live-streamed on the gallery’s FaceBook page on Friday, May 1st at 6pm followed by other Bainbridge galleries. We hope to host an in-person reception on First Friday, June 5th, from 6-8 pm, depending on the Governor’s recommendations.
Mr. Lonning works in subtle grids with soft shades, often complimented by found images, reflecting a sophisticated understanding of Abstract Expressionism and other modern movements. Mr. Lonning’s works are formal in their deference to the grid, though clever use of warm color and space betrays his romantic side. He breaks from the conceptual with the use of stenciled, stamped and found imagery, most of which is obscure, ironic and just humorous enough to let you off the formal hook.
Mr Lonning has worked in a variety of ephemeral media, including photocopy reproductions; in 1977 he installed a Xerox-themed show at U.C. Boulder. He came from the midwest, where he graduated with Honors in Art and Philosophy from the University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire.
In 2009, his LP collage “Milton” was altered and used as the cover for Gypsy Jazz band Ranger and the Re-Arrangers’ second recording, Django’s Tiger.
The original art will be displayed in this exhibit.
