Photographer Steve Schneider will celebrate the publication of his new book, The First Three Songs with an exhibition at Jeffrey Moose Gallery opening on First Friday January 7th from 6-8 PM and running through February 26th. Mr. Schneider will join the reception on First Friday and participate in a Facebook livestream walkthrough from roughly 5:30 to 5:50. The show will also be featured in the February 4th First Friday, also 6-8 PM.
The First Three Songs: Rock and Roll at 125th of a Second is a 220 page coffee table publication documenting Mr. Schneider’s work over fifty years of Rock and Roll photography. The book is the result of Mr. Schneider’s efforts to organize and document his five decades of shooting pictures at concerts. Many shots were published from color negatives the photographer had not seen since he shot them years ago and only discovered with extra time on his hands because of the pandemic.
Separated by decade, the book is filled with shots of many superstars such as the Grateful Dead, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Willie Nelson, Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young, Santana, Eric Clapton, U2, Tom Petty, but also has fantastic shots of lesser known talents like Bonnie Raitt, John Prine, Lucinda Williams, Emmy Lou Harris, Bruce Cockburn, Dave Matthews, Dave Alvin and Arlo Guthrie. For Puget Sound fans, Mr. Schneider offers a healthy dose of Grunge shots from the early 90’s: Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden are well represented.
Growing up in Southern California, Mr. Schneider worked for his high school newspaper and yearbook before he began shooting live concerts in the early 70’s. His first Grateful Dead concert was August 5th, 1971 and in a few years he was backstage at most shows. In 1979, he moved to Washington State and got a job with UPI where he had a strong mentor in Bureau Chief Blake Sell. He has also had affiliations with SIPA Press, USA Today and Gannet. In Time Magazine, through SIPA, his full page shot of Jerry Garcia became the opener to a story on the death of the guitarist. His work has also appeared in Newsweek and Modern Drummer.
The exhibit will feature shots from the new book, in black and white and color, as well as four large small edition prints of Garcia, Dylan + Paul Simon, Santana, Bonnie Raitt and Willie Nelson. Copies of the book will be on sale and the author will sign at the reception.
