As the 30th Anniversary of Jeffrey Moose Gallery continues, the gallery proudly presents a show of photographs of the Grateful Dead from noted photographer Steve Schneider for the months of May and June, 2025. A receptions will be held on First Fridays, from 6-8 PM, May 2nd and June 6th. A FaceBook livestream tour of the show will run from about 5:20-5:40 PM on May 2nd.

Entitled “Dead On”, the images range from vintage film-based shots of the band from the mid 70’s to digital images of their last show in Seattle, May of 1995. Many are shot from the “Pit” in front of the stage and are stunning, frozen moments of musical drama, but others are startling, even more intimate images shot from the stage.

His close association with the band goes back to 1976 when he met drummer Mickey Hart. Many of his Grateful Dead photos have been published on their CDs & DVDs, most recently in a new collection, 60th Anniversary 60 CD box Set “Enjoy The Ride”. Others were published in books including the acclaimed historical collection, Eyes of the World, 2017, Schneider’s own survey of his career, First Three Songs, 2021 and a 1995 full page shot of Garcia in Seattle in Time Magazine in 1995, after the guitarist’s passing. His work has also appeared in Newsweek and Modern Drummer. Schneider’s iconic shot of the closing of Winterland on New Year’s Day, 1978 from behind the stage is legendary; as the band sings an a cappella “And We Bid You Goodnight” at 6 AM, the crowd is overcome with emotion.

Growing up in Southern California, Mr. Schneider worked for his high school newspaper and yearbook before he began shooting live concerts in the early 70’s. His first Grateful Dead concert was September 9th, 1972 at Hollywood Palladium and in a few years he was backstage at most shows. In 1979, he moved to Washington State and got a job with UPI where he had a strong mentor in Bureau Chief Blake Sell. He has also had affiliations with SIPA Press, USA Today and Gannet.
