Mr. Baird received a bachelor’s degree from the Univeristy of Illinios, Champaign in 1987 and, after after studying architecture in Copenhagen Denmark for a year, a Masters in Architecture from the University of Arizona, Tucson in 1991. About that time he also began exhibiting his art and entering competitions. His works on paper, drawings and prints, and some sculpture, have appeared in over 50 exhibitions throughout the US and in Europe, including seven museums, and have won several awards.

Mr. Baird’s works are playful and sparse: negative space plays a huge role as basic shapes (circles, blocks, arcs and gestural lines) dance around in open fields of white paper. Intuitive meanderings, un-premeditated, recall the non deliberation of giants like Jean Arp and Paul Klee while reminding us of his background in Architecture with compositions that seem to search for structure and stability. Though the added marks are the the subject in these works, it is impossible to ignore the voids, for they speak loudly in their mass.

He moved to the Northwest seven years ago after summering here for over 20 years. About a year ago, he took a print making workshop with Davidson Gallery artist Wendy Orville at BARN, Bainbridge Artist Resource Nework. The prints in this exhibit are fruits of that workshop and many subsequent printing sessions. One group of prints, titled “Between the lines: Biblical Speculations”, were created to explore interpretations of the Bible and will show this summer at the Dadian Gallery at the Center for Arts and Religion in Washington, D.C.
