Jeffrey Moose Gallery Services
I began framing my own art in college at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in the early 80’s. As I was concentrating on printmaking, most of the work I framed was on paper. I learned much more about using archival materials and about design concepts from Master Printer Ernest DeSoto, director of Editions press in San Francisco.
The gallery approaches framing with a mind to accomplish two goals: first, to protect and preserve the artwork and, second, to enhance the art, drawing attention to colors, composition and texture. Profit is achieved not by upselling and use of unneeded materials but by success in the two goals and by repeat customers and their referrals.
When I moved the gallery from Seattle in the summer of 2017, I acquired the framing business of long time Bainbridge framers Andrea Roby and Wes King. All of their tools and samples were literally moved across the street, as well as the software used in the design and sales process. This included all the framing records for clients going back 20 plus years, enabling us to match projects and ensure consistency.
The process of frame design is a tricky one. Plenty of customers arrive with a clear idea of what they want, but many are seeking guidance and inspiration. On top of my own career history, Suzanne Wallace brings with her nearly 40 years of experience in the framing business as well as plenty of enthusiasm and an eagerness to share design options. Between the two of us, not only are there multiple design ideas, but we sometimes design as a team, leaving the client to decide the available options.
I work with both local and national wholesalers to access a wide variety of frames, mats and glazing (glass and plexi products). While I prefer natural wood frames, we carry a huge array of mouldings finished in enamel and varnishes, as well as metal mouldings. Frames run from the most modest, common, ready made sizes to elaborate hand-carved moldings that can take a year to complete after ordering.
Clients over the years have included major corporations, law firms, hotels, artists and collectors. For the past two years, the gallery has been the exclusive Framing Partner of Bainbridge Island Museum of Art’s annual Bash fundraiser. We also do many projects for non-profit gallery Bainbridge Arts and Crafts.
