Jeffrey Moose Gallery happily announces “Jazz Portraits 2019, a third year of Jazz portraits showing for October and November in celebration of BIMA’s third year partnering with Within/Earshot Jazz Festival 2019. The exhibit features local painters Cory Bennett Anderson, Anna Pollock and printmaker David Baird together with historic Jazz photos by Jerry Stoll from the collection of an anonymous Bainbridge Island resident.
The exhibit will open on First Friday, October 4th with a reception from 6-8 PM. The next night, Saturday October 5th will feature, for the first time, Ranger and the Re-Arrangers, with guests, live in the gallery.
First mention must go to Mr. Bennett Anderson for his six foot square mixed media image of legendary Seattle vocalist Ernestine Anderson, “My Kinda Swing”. Mr. Bennett Anderson is from Las Vegas, where he was inspired by his artist mother and taken with the aura of celebrity and mixed his “street” style with memorable images of Hollywood’s Kings and Queens. He works in mixed media: bright colors and powerful gestures in ink, spray paint and collaged text create context for the American icons we all revere, emphasizing the fantasy world we live in with them. He attended Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo where he earned a BFA in 2009, studying art and graphic design. He has exhibited in Los Angeles, San Diego, Reno, Miami and Shanghai. Last year he completed a large mural for the Vibe Coworks building in Poulsbo.
Painter Anna Pollock is a local painter who was convinced to do portraits for the exhibition after Mr. Moose saw examples of her work on her phone. Painting since she was 15, artist Gavin Spielman introduced her to oil painting and she’s been in the wood shed ever since, inspired and influenced by music, her second passion. Working principally on the figure, Ms. Pollock studied the works of Lucien Freud and Egon Schiele from books. She was educated at Savannah College of Art and Design for two years and then earned a BFA from Lewis and Clark College in 2013. This is her first gallery exhibition.
BIMA Marketing Director Korum Bischoff selected a mono print by former Bainbridge resident and Jeffrey Moose Gallery artist David Baird to use on the Within/Earshot Jazz Festival 2019 poster, so his work is included. Mr. Baird is also an architect who teaches at the prestigious UNLV School of Architecture. He has exhibited over 50 times since 1990, including many shows juried by well known critics and curators. This summer, he showed work in Washington, D.C. at The Center for The Arts and Religion and is showing currently at Priscilla Fowler Fine Art in Las Vegas.
